Calculate your Body Mass Index and see which category you fall into.
Select your preferred unit system using the toggle at the top of the calculator. For metric, enter your weight in kilograms and height in centimeters. For imperial, enter your weight in pounds and height in feet and inches. The calculator computes your Body Mass Index in real time as you type and displays both the numeric value and the corresponding weight category.
Body Mass Index is a screening tool that uses your height and weight to estimate whether you are underweight, at a healthy weight, overweight, or obese. The categories established by the World Health Organization are: Underweight (BMI below 18.5), Normal weight (18.5 to 24.9), Overweight (25 to 29.9), and Obese (30 and above). The visual color-coded bar on this page makes it easy to see where your result falls on the spectrum.
In metric units, BMI equals weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared: BMI = kg / m². In imperial units, the formula is BMI = (lbs / in²) x 703. Both formulas produce the same result. This calculator handles the conversion automatically so you only need to enter values in your preferred unit system.
While BMI is a widely used and convenient screening metric, it has important limitations. It does not distinguish between muscle mass and fat mass, so very muscular individuals may have a high BMI despite having low body fat. It also does not account for fat distribution, bone density, age, or sex differences. BMI should be considered one data point among many when assessing overall health. Consult a healthcare professional for a complete evaluation.
